Part IV: Judy Gingell: Leaving the Indian Act Behind
Grand Chief Peter Johnston welcomes elder and Yukon First Nations icon Judy Gingell to the studio. As a former Chair of the Council for Yukon Indians, a former Commissioner and as an historic figure in the negotiation and finalization of Land Claims and Self-Government Agreements, Judy shares her story of the quest for consensus that was at the heart of the effort in 1968, and how the dedication and commitment of so many Yukon communities and their leaders, was instrumental to leaving the Indian Act behind. Today, as Judy watches the progress that has been made and the opportunities that are now available for Indigenous youth and women, she truly believes that the effort was worth it. Judy also shares some insight into the First Principles Project (Clip #3), a new initiative that aims to raise awareness of the principles, the spirit and the intent of the Umbrella Final Agreement. The new project will aim to condense the 200+ pages of the agreement into an educational, easy-to-read document that can help youth (and everyone) understand the essence of the document and how it continues to be the foundation that keeps implementation going.
