Part IV: Chief Bill: "We All Look After Our Land"

Grand Chief Peter Johnston welcomes Kwanlin Dün First Nation Chief Doris Bill to talk about KDFN's historic new Land's Act, which came into effect October 15. The Act, entitled Nan kay sháwthän Däk’anúta ch’e ("We all look after our land" in Southern Tutchone), gives the First Nation authority to manage, protect and enforce laws on its settlement lands. "We're incredibly proud of all of the work that has gone into this," says Chief Bill. "There's a lot of thanks to give to a lot of people." Chief Bill also shares important insight into the progress being made to advance community policing and justice, and encourages everyone to stay diligent following the recent loss of a Watson Lake resident due to COVID-19.

Part V: RCMP Chief: Yukon Relationships, Trust

Grand Chief Peter Johnston connects with Scott Sheppard, Chief Superintendent of the Yukon RCMP, to talk about policing priorities in the territory, and national tension during a global pandemic. Chief Sheppard offers his open and honest perspective on the state of affairs in Canada today, and says his team believes in the relationships and the trust that have been established in Yukon communities over the years. "Policing has changed a lot," says Sheppard, adding "I think we need to reel things back in again, and I think we need to just be human with one another and continue to build that trust."

Chambers says leadership meetings, community outreach and engagement sessions have been the priority, and highlights a full schedule of activities related to health, lands and resources, justice and the Yukon Native Language Centre.
